TLDR Follicular unit transplantation is a highly effective and safe treatment for female pattern hair loss.
The study reviewed 751 cases of female pattern hair loss treated with follicular unit transplantation over 31 years. The average patient age was 48 years, with 40% having small areas of hair loss (Ludwig stage I), 45% medium-sized areas (Ludwig stage II), and 15% large areas (Ludwig stage III). The average operative time was 3 hours and 21 minutes. Eighteen percent of patients required a second procedure after an average of 4 years due to the progressive nature of the condition. Complications were minimal, with only six cases of donor-site scar widening and 17 cases of folliculitis. The study concluded that follicular unit transplantation is a highly effective treatment for female pattern hair loss, offering shorter operative times and a low incidence of complications.
