TLDR Hair transplants using follicular unit grafting and a strategic design can give great results even for men with severe hair loss.
The study, conducted over a 22-month period, involved 322 hair transplant procedures, with 61 (approximately 20 percent) performed on men with advanced male pattern baldness or at high risk for it. The use of follicular unit grafting and a strategic frontal forelock design resulted in excellent outcomes and high patient satisfaction. This technique, which minimizes follicle damage and conserves donor hair, along with a conservative hairline design, provided undetectable results in challenging cases. The study underscored the necessity of maximizing donor hair use and minimizing demand through aesthetic design, especially for patients with limited donor hair. The success of the transplants was attributed to careful planning and execution, with the frontal forelock technique being a key design principle. The study concluded that while designed for men with advanced hair loss, these principles are applicable to all hair transplants, and a conservative approach allows for future adjustments if hair loss progression is unpredictable.

      community Verteporfin and Microneedling

      in Treatments 5 months ago
Clinical studies by Dr. Barghouthi and Dr. Bloxham indicate that Verteporfin, when used with FUE and FUT hair transplantation methods, shows promise in hair follicle regeneration and minimal scarring due to its ability to inhibit Yes-associated protein (YAP). Microneedling at depths of 3-3.5mm, combined with Verteporfin, could potentially reactivate dormant follicles, although the optimal dosage and application method are still under investigation. Concerns remain about the DHT sensitivity of regenerated follicles, highlighting the need for further research to optimize trauma levels and Verteporfin concentrations to achieve effective and scar-free hair regeneration.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.
