TLDR Using platelet-rich plasma with microneedling works better for acne scars than microneedling with water.
In a concurrent split-face study involving 50 patients aged 17-32, the combination of autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) with microneedling was compared to microneedling with distilled water for treating atrophic acne scars. The study found that the side of the face treated with PRP and microneedling showed a 62.20% improvement, while the side treated with microneedling and distilled water showed a 45.84% improvement, as measured by Goodman's Quantitative scale. Additionally, 40% of patients had an excellent response to the PRP treatment compared to 10% on the distilled water side, according to Goodman's Qualitative scale. Despite some adverse effects like acne flare-ups and postinflammatory hyperpigmentation, which were treated, the study concluded that PRP significantly improves the outcomes of microneedling for atrophic acne scars.
