TLDR Activating the PI3K/Akt pathway improves hair growth by human dermal papilla cells in hair beads.
The study "Effects of the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway on the hair inductivity of human dermal papilla cells in hair beads" investigated the role of the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway in hair growth. The researchers found that human dermal papilla cells (DPCs) encapsulated in a collagen gel, a method referred to as HB culture, expressed higher levels of genes related to hair growth and generated more hair follicles compared to conventional 2D and spheroid culture methods. The PI3K/Akt signaling pathway was found to be closely associated with the hair inductivity of these cells. The study also found that the intracutaneous transplantation of these HBs in mice efficiently generated hair follicles, indicating a practical approach for hair regenerative medicine.
