TLDR Foxn1 is crucial for skin development and healing, and altering its expression may aid regenerative medicine.
The review discussed the role of the transcription factor Foxn1 in skin development, homeostasis, and wound healing, emphasizing its critical function in keratinocyte differentiation and hair follicle development. Foxn1 was shown to be essential for the transition from scar-free to scar-forming healing, with its deficiency in mice leading to regenerative, scar-less healing. This was characterized by high hyaluronic acid and low collagen levels. Foxn1-deficient mice exhibited a nude phenotype with hairlessness and immunodeficiency, serving as a valuable model for studying skin processes. The study suggested that manipulating Foxn1 expression could offer new avenues for regenerative medicine, potentially improving skin healing processes.
