TLDR Combining platelet-rich plasma with other treatments may improve hair growth in people with hair loss, but more research is needed.
The systematic review discusses the use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in combination with other treatments, such as minoxidil and microneedling, for androgenetic alopecia (AGA). PRP contains growth factors that can promote hair growth and limit hair follicle destruction. Five randomized control trials were examined, showing that combination therapy of PRP and minoxidil increased hair density and hair count compared to monotherapy. However, the studies had small sample sizes and short follow-up periods. Other studies also showed positive results with PRP and minoxidil combination therapy, but they also had limitations such as varied PRP preparation protocols and lack of double-blinding. Therefore, more rigorous clinical trials with larger patient groups and longer follow-up are needed. PRP with microneedling is a viable treatment option for patients who have failed minoxidil treatment, but PRP is more invasive, costly, and carries a small risk of infection.
