TLDR Early onset female hair loss is linked to lower hair density, scalp issues, and certain genetic factors.
This study investigated early onset female pattern hair loss (eFPHL) by comparing 63 patients with eFPHL to 341 controls. It found that eFPHL is characterized by decreased hair shaft density and cross-sectional area, and is associated with androgen-related features such as scalp greasiness, folliculitis, hirsutism, and polycystic ovary syndrome. Patients also reported more frequent scalp pain and itching. Genetic analysis identified 49 significant single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) around genes like PPARGC1A, ABCC4, and CYP19A1, with two notable SNPs in PPARGC1A. The study suggests these findings could help understand the pathology of eFPHL, but emphasizes the need for larger studies due to the limited sample size.
