TLDR People with primary scarring alopecia have higher risks of other health issues like vitamin D deficiency and thyroid disease.
This retrospective multi-site cross-sectional study examined 240 patients with primary scarring alopecia to investigate systemic comorbidities, revealing a higher prevalence of conditions such as metabolic syndrome, vitamin D deficiency, and cardiovascular disease compared to national averages. The study found significant associations between scarring alopecias and metabolic conditions, thyroid disease, and immune-mediated diseases, with notable differences in comorbidity prevalence based on age and type of alopecia. Central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia (CCCA) was linked to traction alopecia and metabolic syndrome, while lichen planopilaris/frontal fibrosing alopecia (LPP/FFA) was associated with cardiovascular disease. The study emphasizes the need for comprehensive patient management and early screening for metabolic risk factors to prevent complications, highlighting the importance of understanding the broader health implications of scarring alopecias. Limitations include its retrospective nature and predominantly female cohort, suggesting further research is needed, particularly in male patients.
