TLDR People with androgenetic alopecia have a higher risk of metabolic syndrome.
This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the association between androgenetic alopecia (AGA) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) across 19 studies with a total of 2,531 participants. The findings revealed that individuals with AGA have a significantly higher risk of MetS, with a pooled odds ratio of 3.46. The study highlighted that female sex, early onset of AGA, and African ethnicity are linked to an increased risk of MetS. Additionally, patients with AGA exhibited poorer metabolic profiles, including higher body mass index, waist circumference, fasting glucose, blood lipids, and blood pressure. The authors recommend that physicians screen for metabolism-related indicators in patients with AGA and call for more rigorously designed studies with larger sample sizes in the future.
