TLDR Type 2 diabetes may increase the risk of severe hair loss in African American women.
The study analyzed the link between type 2 diabetes and severe central scalp hair loss in 5,389 African American women, using data from the Black Women's Health Study and an online questionnaire from 2015. Severe hair loss was defined as levels 3 to 5 on a photographic scale. Results indicated that type 2 diabetes was significantly associated with an increased risk of severe hair loss, with a hazard ratio of 1.68 overall, and 2.05 for those with a diabetes duration of 10 years or more. The study suggests that women with type 2 diabetes should be monitored for central scalp hair loss and that early screening for diabetes in women with such hair loss could be beneficial. However, the study's reliance on self-reported hair loss data may have led to an underestimation of the true association.
