TLDR Camellia japonica seed extract helps hair grow by activating hair follicles and preventing cell aging.
The study found that Camellia japonica seed extract (CJSE) promotes hair growth by preventing dermal papilla cell senescence and activating hair follicle stem cells. CJSE inhibited premature senescence in dermal papilla cells by suppressing p16 expression and increasing Rb phosphorylation, while also enhancing hair follicle stem cell activity by reducing p21 expression. A clinical trial with 47 participants showed that a topical scalp tonic containing 2% CJSE significantly increased hair density over 24 weeks. These results suggest that CJSE could be an effective treatment for androgenic or senescent alopecia by maintaining the anagen phase of hair follicles and enhancing hair growth.
