TLDR Perilla seed extract may help prevent hair loss better than some standard treatments.
This study examines the anti-hair loss potential of perilla seed extracts, particularly those obtained through supercritical fluid extraction (SFE), which showed the highest efficacy. SFE extracts were rich in bioactive compounds like tocopherols and unsaturated fatty acids, promoting human hair follicle dermal papilla cell (HFDPC) proliferation by 139.4% at 72 hours. They exhibited strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, reducing oxidative stress and inflammation, and downregulated genes involved in androgen-mediated hair follicle regression, outperforming standard treatments such as finasteride, dutasteride, and minoxidil in vitro. These findings suggest that SFE-derived perilla seed extract could be a promising natural candidate for preventing hair loss, warranting further investigation for its application in functional foods or nutraceuticals aimed at improving scalp and hair health.
