TLDR Genetics and hormones play a role in male and female hair loss, but more research is needed to fully understand it.
This 12-year-old article provides an update on the role of genetics and sex steroid hormones in male androgenetic alopecia (MAGA) and female pattern hair loss (FPHL). The article explains that both conditions have a genetic predisposition and involve sex steroid hormones, but their full genetic risk profiles and the role of androgens and estrogens remain to be more accurately defined through further research. The authors conclude that while there is still much to learn about the genetics and hormonal factors involved in these conditions, current research suggests that they are complex and multifactorial in nature.
