TLDR A49T gene variant linked to higher prostate cancer risk, lower hormone levels, and slightly reduced balding risk.
This study from 2007 investigated the association between genetic variants of the SRD5A2 gene and prostate cancer risk, circulating hormone levels, and androgenetic alopecia. The study found that carriers of the A49T variant had a higher risk of prostate cancer and lower levels of 3a-diolG, a hormone synthesized in the prostate. The study also found a marginally significant association between the presence of the A49T variant and decreased risk of balding. The findings suggest that the A49T variant may play a role in both prostate cancer risk and androgenetic alopecia.
