TLDR Innovative cosmetics could safely change hair color by targeting biological hair pigmentation processes.
The review explored the complex biology of mammalian hair pigmentation, focusing on the potential for developing innovative hair color-changing cosmetics by modulating pigment production in hair follicles. It highlighted the genetic and biochemical complexity of processes like melanosome biogenesis, melanogenesis, and melanin transfer, emphasizing the need for safer hair dyeing methods due to the adverse effects of traditional dyes. The study detailed the roles of melanocyte stem cells, molecular signals, and various pathways in hair pigmentation, including the impact of oxidative stress and aging on hair greying. Understanding these processes could lead to cosmetics that alter hair color internally, offering a safer alternative to traditional dyes.
