TLDR 5-Bromo-3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde could potentially help hair growth by activating certain cell pathways and inhibiting others.
The study investigated the effects of 5-bromo-3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde (BDB) on hair growth using rat vibrissa follicles and dermal papilla cells (DPCs). BDB was found to increase the length of hair fibers and the proliferation of DPCs, which regulate hair growth. It also activated the Wnt/β-catenin and autophagy pathways, known to promote hair growth, and inhibited the TGF-β pathway, known to inhibit hair growth. BDB also inhibited TGF-β1-induced activation of Smad2 in DPCs, which is known to induce apoptosis of epithelial cells in hair follicles. These findings suggest that BDB could potentially be used as a treatment for hair loss.
