TLDR Undariopsis peterseniana extract helps hair grow by activating certain cell growth pathways and could be a new treatment for hair loss.
The 2017 study found that Undariopsis peterseniana extract promotes hair growth by activating hair follicle development and cycling pathways, specifically the Wnt/β-catenin and ERK pathways. The extract increased hair-fiber lengths in rat vibrissa follicles and accelerated the hair growth phase in C57BL/6 mice. It also inhibited 5α-reductase activity, which is associated with androgenetic alopecia, and promoted the proliferation of dermal papilla cells. The active compound identified was apo-9'-fucoxanthinone. The extract's effects were comparable to minoxidil, suggesting its potential as a new treatment for alopecia. The number of animals used in the study was not specified.
