TLDR Hydroxychloroquine may help some hair disorders, but results vary.
Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) was used to treat hair disorders with autoimmune components such as lichen planopilaris (LPP), frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA), and alopecia areata (AA). The literature indicated variable efficacy, with some patients experiencing halted hair loss while others saw no improvement. Treatment regimens varied from HCQ monotherapy to combinations with other agents like steroids. Despite the lack of standardized treatment guidelines, HCQ was recommended as a potential option for these conditions, with decisions tailored to individual patient characteristics and clinical judgment, considering the risks of side effects.
