TLDR Treatment with dutasteride, minoxidil, and artificial hair transplantation improved appearance but caused folliculitis.
This case report describes a premenopausal patient with familial frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) who was treated with dutasteride and minoxidil, which stabilized her hair loss. Artificial hair transplantation was then performed, which led to significant cosmetic improvement but also caused folliculitis. The implants were removed, and the patient became symptom-free. The report suggests that hydroxychloroquine and methotrexate play little role in preventing or altering the progression of FFA, and further research is needed to identify the optimal treatment for arresting the progressive recession of the frontotemporal hairline.
