TLDR Stem cell therapy shows promise for treating hair loss in androgenetic alopecia.
This review explores the potential of stem cell therapy as a treatment for androgenetic alopecia (AGA) by analyzing 165 articles from 2012 to 2022. It highlights the role of stem cells, such as adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) and hair follicle stem cells (HFSCs), in hair follicle regeneration and their impact on AGA prognosis. Various studies demonstrate significant improvements in hair density and growth, with ADSCs and HFSCs showing promising results in trials involving up to 38 patients. The review suggests that stem cell therapies could offer effective, minimally invasive alternatives to conventional AGA treatments like minoxidil and finasteride, although challenges such as the lack of standardized protocols remain. Overall, stem cell therapy presents a promising approach for managing AGA and offers new hope for patients experiencing hair loss.
