TLDR Oral minoxidil is a safe and effective treatment for alopecia, improving hair growth with minor side effects.
This systematic review and meta-analysis assessed the efficacy and safety of oral minoxidil in treating alopecia, analyzing data from 27 studies with 2,933 patients. The findings show that oral minoxidil effectively improves hair density and growth rate, with 35% of participants experiencing significant improvement. The treatment has a high safety profile, with minor adverse effects like hypertrichosis and lower limb edema. Subgroup analyses found no significant differences in symptom improvement across dosage groups, though higher doses increased hypertrichosis. The review suggests oral minoxidil as a safe and effective treatment option for alopecia, comparable to topical treatments, but notes that further research is needed to confirm long-term safety and optimal dosing.
