Minoxidil Promotes Hair Growth Through Stimulation of Growth Factor Release from Adipose-Derived Stem Cells

    A study from 2018 found that minoxidil promotes hair growth by stimulating the release of growth factors from adipose-derived stem cells. This can potentially lead to new hair growth treatments. Minoxidil was found to promote hair growth in mice and ex vivo organ culture by stimulating the release of growth factors from stem cells, which speeds up the hair growth cycle. The drug does not affect cell proliferation but increases cell migration in a dose-dependent manner. The effect is specific to adipose-derived stem cells, suggesting that minoxidil directly promotes hair growth by stimulating these cells.
