TLDR Hair growth-related cells need the enzyme SCD1 to help maintain the area that supports hair growth.
This document presents findings that suggest hair matrix progenitors and the enzyme Stearoyl CoA Desaturase 1 (SCD1) play a role in maintaining the dermal papilla niche, which is crucial for hair growth, during the anagen-catagen transition of the mouse hair cycle. The study indicates that this maintenance may occur through autocrine Wnt signaling and paracrine Hedgehog signaling. This is reported to be the first evidence of matrix progenitor cells' potential involvement in sustaining the dermal papilla niche.
