TLDR Bioengineered hair germs using special hydrogels can help regenerate hair follicles and treat hair loss.
The study successfully developed large-scale bioengineered hair germs (BHGs) using a novel coaxial-flow microfluidic system, which encapsulates Wnt3a in dual-layered microspheres to promote hair follicle regeneration. The system utilizes HME hydrogels and GelMA to provide a supportive scaffold, ensuring consistent encapsulation and sustained Wnt3a release. In vivo experiments on BALB/c nude mice demonstrated that these BHGs led to a higher number of regenerated hair germs and reduced inflammation compared to traditional methods. The study highlights the potential of this system for clinical applications in treating hair loss conditions such as alopecia, although further research is needed to assess long-term efficacy and safety.
