TLDR The method can test hair growth products using a lab-made hair-like structure that responds to known treatments.
The study developed a method for testing hair growth promoting agents by creating a hair follicle-like structure (HFLS) using an immortalized cell line derived from dermal papilla cells and a neonatal foreskin-derived keratinocyte cell line. The HFLS was treated with three known hair growth promoting compounds: minoxidil, tofacitinib, and ascorbic acid. The results showed a significant increase in the elongation of the HFLS upon treatment with these compounds, suggesting this method could be used for screening and evaluating hair care materials. The number of HFLS in each group ranged from 46 to 98 individual structures.

Pelage is developing a topical hair follicle stem cell therapy, PP405, for non-scarring alopecias like androgenetic alopecia, with Phase III trials planned and a potential market launch by 2027. The treatment may not require continuous use after initial regrowth.

PP405 and GT20029 are new hair loss treatments with different mechanisms from traditional options like Minoxidil and Finasteride. PP405 targets hair follicle stem cells to reactivate growth, while GT20029 works as an androgen receptor deleter, both requiring ongoing use for effectiveness.
