TLDR JAM-A helps hair regrowth in alopecia areata by protecting VCAN in skin cells.
The study investigates the role of Junctional Adhesion Molecule-A (JAM-A) in hair follicle regeneration in alopecia areata (AA) by functioning as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) to protect Versican (VCAN) expression in dermal papilla cells (hDPCs). The researchers found that JAM-A and VCAN are down-regulated in AA patients, and reducing JAM-A expression delayed hair regrowth in mice. Overexpression of JAM-A 3′ UTR restored VCAN expression and cell aggregation, suggesting a miRNA-dependent mechanism. These findings highlight JAM-A's critical role in hair regeneration and its potential as a therapeutic target for AA.
