TLDR International guidelines for treating alopecia areata vary, focusing on different treatment options and related health issues.
This review compares international guidelines for managing alopecia areata (AA), a chronic autoimmune disorder affecting about 2% of the population. It highlights the importance of a multidisciplinary approach and the use of the Severity of Alopecia Tool (SALT) for assessing hair loss. Treatment options vary globally, with European guidelines recommending systemic therapy for severe cases, while Australian guidelines lack universal indications. Emerging therapies like JAK inhibitors show promise, though safety concerns exist. The review emphasizes the need for more robust evidence, standardized treatment protocols, and a personalized approach considering age, comorbidities, and psychological impact. Future research should focus on the long-term safety and efficacy of new treatments, identification of biomarkers, and integrating psychosocial outcomes as core endpoints. Despite advancements, translating these innovations into clinical practice remains challenging, underscoring the need for a biomarker-driven, multidisciplinary approach to improve outcomes in AA.
