TLDR Alopecia areata patients, especially women with nail issues or atopic diseases, are at higher risk for other autoimmune diseases.
The study investigated the prevalence and risk factors of autoimmune diseases in patients with alopecia areata (AA) and found that AA patients had a higher prevalence of autoimmune diseases compared to the general population. Among 1,200 participants, 38% had at least one other autoimmune condition, with thyroid disorders, vitiligo, and rheumatoid arthritis being the most common. Significant risk factors included a family history of autoimmune diseases and the severity of AA. The study emphasized the importance of monitoring AA patients for other autoimmune conditions to provide comprehensive care.
