TLDR Glycyrrhizin nanocarriers effectively deliver baicalin to hair follicles, promoting hair growth and offering a promising alopecia treatment with fewer side effects.
The study explored the use of glycyrrhizin (GL) micellar nanocarriers for the topical delivery of baicalin (BC) to hair follicles as a treatment for androgenetic alopecia (AGA). GL was used to encapsulate BC, forming GL-BC and GL-TW-BC nanomicelles, which improved BC's skin permeability, bioavailability, and cellular uptake. These formulations significantly enhanced BC penetration and accumulation in porcine skin via hair follicle pathways without causing skin irritation, offering a targeted and site-specific treatment. The study demonstrated that these nanomicelles could synergistically promote hair growth by activating the Wnt/β-catenin pathway and enhancing dermal papilla cell activity, providing a promising alternative to existing alopecia treatments with fewer side effects.
