TLDR Key genes influencing sheep hair follicle development were identified, aiding wool breeding and understanding human hair conditions.
The study analyzed mRNA data from 18 Merino sheep to identify genes related to hair follicle development, revealing 7879 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and 12623 novel-DEGs across six developmental stages. Key genes such as LAMA5, WNT10A, and BMP7 were identified as influential in hair follicle morphogenesis. The findings provided insights into the molecular basis of hair follicle development, offering a foundation for improving sheep wool breeding and potential clues for understanding human hair development and conditions like hair loss and alopecia areata.
