TLDR Laser treatment, especially when combined with other therapies, is effective for hair regrowth in alopecia areata.
The study involved 64 patients with alopecia areata (AA) and examined the effectiveness of fractional carbon dioxide laser (FCL) treatment alone and in combination with Triamcinolone acetonide (TA), platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and vitamin D. All treatment groups showed significant improvement, with the best response observed in the group treated with FCL and TA (72.6% improvement), and the least improvement in the group treated with FCL alone (57.5% improvement). Histologic examination revealed an increase in the number of anagen follicles and a decrease in the number of telogen/catagen follicles after treatment. The study also found a significant increase in the expression of Decorin, a protein involved in hair growth, after treatment. The study concluded that FCL, both alone and in combination with other treatments, is effective in treating AA, and that the upregulation of decorin expression is associated with restoration of hair growth in AA.
