TLDR Injecting vitamin D3 into the skin is an effective treatment for patchy hair loss.
The randomized controlled clinical trial conducted by Rashad, Elgamal, and Fouda involved 60 adult patients with localized alopecia areata. The patients were divided into two groups: Group I, which consisted of 30 patients who received 1ml of intralesional injection of vitamin D3 every 4 weeks for a maximum of 3 sessions, and Group II, which consisted of 30 patients who received intralesional injection of normal saline 0.9% every 4 weeks for 3 sessions as a control group. The results showed a statistically significant difference in the degree of improvement between the two groups, with the vitamin D3 group showing better results. The adverse effects were negligible and transient, and there was no recurrence of lesions. The study concluded that intralesional vitamin D3 is an effective treatment option for localized patchy alopecia areata, and there is no relation between serum vitamin D3 and efficacy of treatment, so measuring vitamin D3 before starting treatment is not advised.
