TLDR Topical calcipotriol may help treat alopecia areata, especially in those with low vitamin D.
This pilot study investigated the efficacy of topical calcipotriol lotion 0.005% in treating alopecia areata (AA) in 22 patients over 3 months. Hair regrowth was observed in 13 (59.1%) patients, with the mean onset of disease stabilization and hair regrowth occurring at 4 weeks and 4.21±2.13 weeks, respectively. Significant improvements (SALT50 and SALT100) were noted in 6 (46.2%) and 2 (9%) patients, respectively. The treatment was more effective in patients with lower serum vitamin D levels (p < .009). The study concluded that topical calcipotriol could be a viable alternative treatment for AA, especially in vitamin D deficient patients.
