TLDR Topical calcipotriol may help treat alopecia areata, especially in those with low vitamin D.
The study investigated the efficacy of topical calcipotriol (0.005%) in treating alopecia areata (AA) and its correlation with serum vitamin D levels. Conducted on 22 patients over 3 months, the treatment resulted in hair regrowth in 13 (59.1%) patients, with disease stabilization and hair regrowth occurring on average at 4 weeks and 4.21±2.13 weeks, respectively. Significant improvements (SALT50 and SALT100) were observed in 6 (46.2%) and 2 (9%) patients, respectively. The treatment was more effective in patients with lower vitamin D levels (p < .009), suggesting that topical calcipotriol could be a viable alternative for AA, especially in vitamin D deficient individuals.
