TLDR People with Alopecia Areata often have lower vitamin D levels, and vitamin D supplements might help treat it.
The systematic review and meta-analysis from August 9, 2020, which included data from 1585 patients with Alopecia Areata (AA) and 1114 controls from 19 studies, found that patients with AA had significantly lower serum levels of vitamin D but not calcium compared to controls. The study concluded that vitamin D deficiency is associated with AA and that vitamin D supplementation could be beneficial in its treatment. However, the study faced limitations such as high inter-study heterogeneity and the inability to resolve confounding factors, and it recommended caution in generalizing the findings to all AA patients, especially children. No funding was received for the study, and it complied with ethical guidelines.
