TLDR People with Alopecia areata often have lower Vitamin D levels, which might affect the severity of their condition.
In 2019, a hospital-based case-control study in North-India examined the correlation between Vitamin D levels and Alopecia Areata (AA) in 135 patients and 135 age- and sex-matched controls. The study found that a higher number of patients with AA had deficient and insufficient levels of Vitamin D compared to the control group, a difference that was statistically significant. Additionally, Vitamin D levels were found to negatively correlate with the severity, extent, and pattern of the disease. The study concluded that Vitamin D deficiency may play a role in the development or exacerbation of AA, suggesting that Vitamin D supplementation could potentially improve the clinical outcome of AA. The researchers recommended that patients with AA should be screened for Vitamin D deficiency and treated accordingly.
