TLDR Alopecia areata patients have lower vitamin D levels than healthy individuals.
The study found that patients with alopecia areata (AA) had significantly lower serum vitamin D levels compared to healthy controls, with a cutoff value of 17.23 ng/mL effectively distinguishing between the two groups. Male patients had lower vitamin D levels than females, but this gender difference was not observed in the control group. A positive correlation existed between vitamin D and calcium levels in AA patients, though no link was found between vitamin D levels and hair loss severity. The study suggested a potential role for vitamin D in AA, indicating it might offer preventive or therapeutic benefits, but emphasized the need for further research due to limitations such as small sample size and lack of vitamin D supplementation data.
