TLDR Researchers developed a 3D model of human hair follicle cells that can help understand hair growth and test new hair loss treatments.
In 2018, researchers developed a three-dimensional in vitro organoid model of the human hair follicle's dermal papilla (DP) to study hair regeneration. They created DP spheroids (DPS) that showed enhanced DP-specific gene expression and extracellular matrix (ECM) production compared to 2D cultures. The model was tested with minoxidil, which increased the expression of growth factors and ECM proteins. Additionally, they developed a more complex model by encapsulating DPS with silk-gelatin hydrogel, keratinocytes, and stem cells, which highlighted the importance of cell-cell interaction and hypoxia. The study concluded that this model could provide insights into hair follicle morphogenesis and the hair cycle, and could be used to evaluate new hair regeneration treatments. The number of cells used in the spheroids was 5 × 10³ per spheroid, but the exact number of replicates was not specified.
