TLDR Platelet-rich plasma therapy is a safe and effective treatment for alopecia areata.
A systematic review of nine studies involving 616 patients evaluated the effectiveness and safety of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy in treating alopecia areata. The studies compared PRP with other treatments such as triamcinolone acetonide, minoxidil, and placebo. The results showed that PRP was more effective than these treatments, with minoxidil showing positive effects when used alongside PRP. Most side effects of PRP were minor. The review concluded that PRP is a safe and effective treatment option for alopecia areata, with fewer complications compared to other treatments. However, more research is needed, particularly with larger sample sizes and severe cases of alopecia areata.
