TLDR 2.2% minoxidil gel effectively and safely treats alopecia areata.
The study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of 2.2% minoxidil gel compared to a placebo in treating alopecia areata. Conducted as a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, multicenter trial, 128 patients participated, with 66 using minoxidil gel and 62 using a placebo, applied twice daily for 3 months. Results showed that the minoxidil group experienced significantly better outcomes in hair regrowth, hair length, and reduction of bald areas compared to the placebo group. Adverse reactions were similar between the groups, occurring in 7.58% of the minoxidil group and 6.45% of the placebo group, indicating no significant difference in safety. The study concluded that 2.2% minoxidil gel was effective and safe for treating alopecia areata.
