TLDR 1% minoxidil didn't improve hair growth for severe alopecia areata.
The study conducted a double-blind trial with 50 patients suffering from extensive alopecia areata to evaluate the effectiveness of 1% minoxidil applied topically compared to a placebo (unguetum merck alone). The results indicated that there was no significant difference in hair growth between the patients treated with the active compound and those who received the placebo.
