TLDR 1% minoxidil didn't improve hair growth for severe alopecia areata.
A trial conducted 39 years ago involved 50 patients with extensive alopecia areata to evaluate the effectiveness of 1% minoxidil applied topically compared to a placebo (unguetum merck alone). The study concluded that there was no significant difference in hair growth between the patients treated with 1% minoxidil and those who received the placebo.
