TLDR Minoxidil is safe and effectively increases hair growth in early male pattern baldness.
This 1988 study conducted in The Netherlands evaluated the efficacy and safety of a 2% minoxidil solution compared to a placebo in treating early male pattern alopecia over 24 weeks. A total of 144 male patients participated, applying 1 ml of either the minoxidil or placebo solution twice daily. The results showed that the 2% minoxidil solution was approximately three times more effective than the placebo in improving hair count and subjective evaluations by both investigators and patients. The study found no significant effects of minoxidil on blood pressure, pulse rate, or body weight. One participant in the placebo group withdrew due to a skin rash. Overall, the study supported the safe and effective use of minoxidil for early male pattern alopecia.
