TLDR Minoxidil applied twice daily can help regrow hair in some people with hereditary baldness, with no serious side effects.
In a study conducted on 56 patients with hereditary male pattern baldness, researchers tested the effectiveness of topical minoxidil therapy. The patients had a visible balding patch on the vertex of their head, at least 2.5 cm in diameter. Minoxidil was applied twice a day to the scalp, starting at the balding area and spreading outwards. The study found that 32% of patients achieved cosmetically acceptable hair growth. Factors such as the initial number of indeterminate hairs, duration of baldness, and size of the balding area were found to be significant indicators of hair regrowth. No serious side effects were observed.
