TLDR Scarring alopecia causes permanent hair loss, and treatment aims to reduce inflammation and stop it from getting worse.
Scarring alopecia, characterized by inflammation and destruction of hair follicles, leads to permanent hair loss and significant distress. It can be primary (e.g., lichen planopilaris) or secondary (e.g., due to burns). Unlike non-scarring alopecia, treatment focuses on reducing inflammation and preventing progression rather than regrowth. First-line treatments include topical and intralesional corticosteroids, with other options like surgical hair transplantation, platelet-rich plasma, low-level light therapy, and systemic medications such as hydroxychloroquine.
