4 citations,
March 2021 in “Parasitology Research” This study reported the first clinical case of besnoitiosis in two donkeys in northern Italy, confirming the presence of Besnoitia spp. in Italian equids. Clinical signs included scleral pearls, alopecia, hyperkeratosis, and skin nodules. Both donkeys tested seropositive for Besnoitia spp. antibodies and exhibited light anemia, leukocytosis with eosinophilia, lymphocytosis, hypoalbuminemia, and elevated alkaline phosphatase. DNA analysis showed 100% homology with Besnoitia spp. The findings suggested that equine besnoitiosis might be more widespread in Europe than previously thought, highlighting the need for further research and early diagnosis to prevent the spread of this neglected disease.
