TLDR A tough membrane between the outer and inner layers of human hair protects it from damage.
The study identified a highly resistant membrane-like structure located between the cuticle and cortex of human hair. Using chemically treated whole and split hair fibers, researchers observed this structure, which showed significant resistance to chemical treatments. It was suggested that steryl glucoside-like lipids might be present in this structure, which likely helps protect the cortex from external stimuli more effectively than the cuticle's surface.
