TLDR Future research on female pattern hair loss should focus on treatment effectiveness, safety, and understanding causes.
The bibliometric study on female pattern hair loss (FPHL) analyzed 488 publications from 1957 to 2024, revealing a significant increase in research, particularly after 2002, with the USA leading in contributions and collaborations. The study highlights the need for further research to establish the long-term efficacy and safety of FPHL treatments and to refine personalized treatment strategies. It identifies key contributors and journals, with a focus on mechanisms, management, and safety, and notes the multifactorial etiology of FPHL involving genetics and hormones. Topical minoxidil is identified as the primary treatment, though 40% of patients do not respond, indicating a need for more high-quality trials and exploration of new therapeutic combinations. Emerging research trends include the role of scalp health, associations with systemic conditions, and vitamin D as a potential factor in hair health.
