TLDR Certain gut bacteria may increase or decrease the risk of male pattern baldness.
The research paper "Roles of gut microbiota in androgenetic alopecia: insights from Mendelian randomization analysis" used a two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis to investigate the relationship between gut microbiota and androgenetic alopecia (AGA). The study used data from 211 gut microbial taxa and genome-wide association studies for AGA, which included 195 cases and 201,019 controls. The results showed that the genus Olsenella, genus Ruminococcaceae UCG-004, and genus Ruminococcaceae UCG-010 were risk factors for AGA, while the family Acidaminococcaceae, genus Anaerofilum, and genus Ruminiclostridium 9 had a protective effect. This suggests that specific gut microbiota could play a role in AGA development, potentially aiding in its prevention and control.
