TLDR Plumbago zeylanica extract helps hair growth and reduces a hair loss-related enzyme.
The study focused on the role of senescence in hair follicle dermal papilla (DP) cells in androgenetic alopecia (AGA) and the therapeutic potential of Plumbago zeylanica extract. It was found that senescent DP cells up-regulated the expression of 5α-reductase type II (SRD5A2), an enzyme linked to AGA. The extract, particularly its component plumbagin, enhanced DP cell growth and down-regulated SRD5A2 expression. These findings suggest that Plumbago zeylanica extract and plumbagin could be beneficial in treating AGA by promoting DP cell growth and reducing SRD5A2 expression. The study was conducted on cultured human DP cells and did not involve human participants, with experiments performed in triplicate.
