TLDR Justicia procumbens extract may help prevent hair loss and improve hair thickness and shine in a type of hair loss condition.
The study investigated the effects of an aqueous extract of Justicia procumbens (JPAE) on androgenic alopecia (AGA), a common hair loss condition. The research used human hair follicle dermal papilla cells (HFDPC) and a mouse model of testosterone-induced AGA. The results showed that JPAE treatment increased HFDPC proliferation by activating the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway, crucial for hair growth. It also increased the expression of Wnt targets, such as cyclin D1 and VEGF, by promoting the translocation of β-catenin to the nucleus. In the AGA mouse model, JPAE administration reduced hair loss, increased hair thickness, and enhanced hair shine. The study concluded that JPAE is potentially effective against androgenic alopecia.
