TLDR Androgenetic alopecia causes significant psychological distress, especially in women, and requires both medical and psychological support.
This systematic review examines the psychological impact of androgenetic alopecia (AA), affecting up to 80% of males and 50% of females, and highlights its significant effects on self-esteem, body image, anxiety, and depression. Analyzing 41 studies with 7,995 patients, the review finds that AA leads to anxiety, helplessness, and reduced self-esteem, with females experiencing higher levels of distress than males. Factors such as being single, younger age, and seeking medical treatment are linked to higher psychological distress. The review emphasizes the need for psychological support alongside medical treatments like minoxidil and finasteride, which have varying efficacy, and suggests a multidisciplinary approach, including psychotherapy, to address the psychosocial morbidity of AA. Limitations include small sample sizes and lack of diversity, indicating a need for further research.
